I took a break… A reminder.

For anyone that has been following my journey, you have read about trials, and successes, and generally can see and understand that I am a bit of a work-a-holic. I have spent close to a decade working over 40 hours a week, sometimes as much as 80–90 hours a week. I had life-changing events in 2020 that slowed me down and reminded me that it was time to start focusing on doing things in a much different way. That I needed to slow down and start focusing on work-life balance.

Going into the Christmas break I had had a ton of stuff planned, I had planned on diving deeper into react and redux, and had planned to start a portfolio ready project that I had been planning, but things kept coming up, things kept hitting from multiple directions and I realized that honestly, I needed to take a minute and recoup and reset.

This is not normal for me. I have never really had a Christmas break since I was a teenager, and had not really even noticed it. I always either worked up to Christmas or a half-day or whatnot. This was a hard change for me, and it was a deviation from what I had done for the week-long Thanksgiving break that I had. Instead of relaxing and hanging out, I had tried to pound through a 20-hour Udemy course. (Which when you start working on it you realize is much longer than that)

So I am writing this today, one day from returning back to real life tomorrow. Full time grind, and for once I am rested and ready to go instead of feeling as though I just sprinted for the last two weeks. It is kind of a surreal experience.

If you have not done so make sure that you take a moment. Take a break and take a hard look at what is around you. Smell the roses so to speak. Play a game, relax with your family, sleep all day, binge watch dumb reality tv shows, hike a trail, fish, go for a bike ride, take a drive… Relax.
