The Education Evolution — That needs to happen
I have to admit that I struggled with the concept of the American education system. Be it K-12, or collegiate. I personally was rapidly pushed ahead when I was younger, bouncing up from 6th grade to 8th, and then in high school, I finally had enough and at 16 got my GED and moved into the workplace. I loved it.
I loved the concept that I was getting something accomplished, that I was actually making things work instead of talking about making things work. Theory is certainly important. The idea of being a well-rounded, and well-versed person is important.
So what is wrong with K-12? To be clear so that I do not get the letters from the SEIU and Teachers (including close friends, and family): Teachers do the best they can with the system that they are given. That said, let's be honest. The state of K-12 is that we are fighting to pass standardized tests. We are teaching to standardized tests, and children are being left behind.
I floundered at times because of moves throughout the country, but also the fact that the curriculum was so varied as you go school to school, even in the same state. The lack of consistency was beyond frustrating. There were no life skills classes, no lessons on budgeting, minimal teaching on goal setting. Sadly, all there was, was the core curriculum and a couple of electives like guitar…
